Dr. Shagufta Perveen, a Pakistani national, Natural Product Chemist/Scientist by profession, born in a religious, modern, well-educated and patriotic family. Her father, Muhammad Kamran Khan is Deputy Manager (R) from civil engineering department of Pakistan Steels Mills Corporation and mother Razia Khanum is a housewife. Since Pakistan came into being, most of her family members were serving Government of Pakistan in different departments such as Pakistan Railway, Accountant General Office, Education, Police, etc.
Dr. Shagufta obtained her early education from her home town Shah Faisal Colony, Karachi and later moved to University of Karachi and graduated in Organic Chemistry with 1st division. After graduation, she got scholarship from Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and joined one of the finest institutes of Pakistan, International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry and Dr Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research), University of Karachi for higher studies in Chemistry and Biology. The ICCBS was governed by world’s well-known scientists including Professor Dr Atta-ur-Rahman a UNESCO, Science Laureate (F.R.S., N.I., H.I., S.I., T.I.) as Patron-in-Chief and his mentee Prof. Dr Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary (H.I., S.I., T.I.) as Director. Dr Shagufta started her PhD in 2003 under supervision of Prof Dr Abdul Malik (R) (S.I.), who was a senior faculty member of ICCBS and also performed duties of acting director in the absence of Director. Dr Shagufta completed Part A of her thesis topic “Phytochemical Investigation on the Chemical Constituents of Perovskia Atriplicifolia” from ICCBS (HEJ), University of Karachi, Pakistan.
At the end of 2006, she got another short-term scholarship and joined Prof. Dr Jeremy D Kilburn (Head of School of Chemistry) at University of Southampton, GB, where she completed Part B of her thesis topic “The Synthesis of Super-molecules”.
By the end of 2008 she had completed all the requirements of degree and in March-2009, she was awarded the degree. She was engaged the same year and got married in the following year. She is a mother of three boys Muhammad (2011), Mustafa (2013) and Mujtaba (2015), sharing the surname Hassan Khan. All kids are named on the name of her Ideal Muhammadﷺ the Last and most Beloved Prophet from Allah (God) to the Muslims. She never compromised on standards, hence perfectly managed her family, kids’ education as well as her career and students. Masha-Allah, all her kids are excellent in education and extra-curricular activities and receiving certificates of merit and medals since their early education.
Immediately after the degree she got offer from King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as Assistant Professor Natural Product Chemistry at Department of Pharmacognosy, College of Pharmacy which she accepted immediately. After completion of paper work for Saudi Arabia, she got two other offers as Assistant Professor Chemistry from Federal Urdu University of Karachi, Pakistan as permanent faculty and second as tenure track for 1 year. She joined the King Saud University in September 2009; where she was associated with the profession of teaching and multi dimension researches. She is currently working as a Professor. Prior to current role, she taught in a private college in her home town.
In addition, Dr. Shagufta is also a visiting scientist scholar at Michigan State University-US, the University of Edinburgh-GB and University of Naples Federico II Naples-IT.
Dr. Shagufta idealized Professor Dr Atta-ur-Rahman a UNESCO, Science Laureate (F.R.S., N.I., H.I., S.I., T.I.) and Patron-in-Chief of her Alma Mater, as a role model and scientist. She has taught various courses in Pharmacognosy department at Riyadh Girl’s Campus- Pharmacy Collage and has been a part of 17 different Editorial Board of Scientific Journals and member of organizing committee of different international conferences and meetings. Dr Shagufta Perveen is member of many internationally recognized professional scientific bodies. She is also an editor and author of various books, chapters and ISI research papers during her long career and has worked on numerous projects with different scientific organizations, societies and institutions. Currently, Dr Perveen is working with the department director.
Her main interests are bioassay guided Isolation of natural product from medicinal, marine, herbal and edible plants, validated HPLC method for the standardization, expertise in modern HPLC/UPLC techniques and synthetic organic chemistry, traditional medicines, industry problem like palm tree bug, Plant endophytes, microbial transformation, etc.
Dr. Shagufta’s family has always been very supportive in the field of education. Her younger sister, Sonia Kamran/Naushad (father/husband) is also associated with the same field as she is working on the subject of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry on Scholarship from Higher Education Commission of Pakistan under the supervision of Dr Syed Tarique Moin (Assistant Professor) from the ICCBS (HEJ), University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan.
Dr. Shagufta’s love her Creator (Allah) and His Beloved Prophet Muhammadﷺ, she is a soft-hearted personality believed in humanity, community work; supporting education and poverty alleviation by micro financing. She plays a main role in organizing the Shagufta Perveen Foundation an NGO with the same beliefs.
